Artist's Statement
Hiking... canoeing... skiing... walking around town... driving to the grocery store... the camera is always there... but it doesn't always get brought up to my eye. There has to be something - the light on the water, the odd angle I'm seeing the building, the sky over the mountain summit, the rich tones on the ferns... that's right, tones, not color, but the tonal gradations that I know will make something special when I'm in the darkroom, whether it is a straight black & white or a sepia toned print. Am I seeing panoramic today?... or do I want to be more spontaneous with my Holga camera and keep things within the simple square frame? How is this going to work for me when I get back in the darkroom? Am I going to get the tones I'm seeing here on the forest floor?... or the gradient change as the light diminishes across Lower Saranac Lake?... or those intense storm clouds hanging over the High Peaks? Is that sharp angle way over in the lower left corner going to translate in the final print of this building on a street in New York? When I get in the darkroom, are those tones I was seeing out there, somewhere, going to feed me?... or am I going to go hungry with today's efforts not working for me... what I want to see, what I need to see when I flip on the light and the print is lying there in the fixer, seeing it for the first time. Usually, by the time I get to making that print, I'm excited about what I see... and it's not always as I saw it on that city street or the mountain trail... and those surprises are the BEST!
